Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology
University of Michigan Medical School
rjagsi@med.umich.edu

Reshma Jagsi, M.D., D.Phil. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Michigan.  Dr. Jagsi has a longstanding interest in issues at the intersection of social science and medicine.  She received her A.B. in Government, summa cum laude and first in her class at Harvard University.  She then went on to receive her M.D. from Harvard Medical School and her D.Phil. in Social Policy from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar.  Dr. Jagsi completed her residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and served as Chief Resident in the Harvard Radiation Oncology Program.  She also served as a Fellow in Harvard’s Center for Ethics.  She joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 2006.

Dr. Jagsi’s medical research focuses on improving the quality of care received by breast cancer patients, both by advancing the ways in which breast cancer is treated with radiation and by advancing the understanding of patient decision-making, cost, and access to appropriate care.  Her social scientific research includes research into issues of bioethics and research regarding gender issues, including studies of women's representation in the senior ranks of academic medicine, barriers to their advancement, and interventions intended to increase their representation.

In her Physician Faculty Scholar’s project, “A Mixed Qualitative and Quantitative Investigation into the Barriers Facing Junior Physician Faculty Researchers,” Dr. Jagsi will explore the challenges faced by young physician researchers and the reasons for gender disparities in advancement in academic medicine.  She will conduct a mixed methods social scientific study, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods, drawing her subjects from the ranks of former Robert Wood Johnson Generalist Scholars and other career development awardees and their mentors.

Originally a Texas native, Dr. Jagsi resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan with her husband John Pottow, Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School, and their two young children.
