Andrea L. Cherrington, M.D., M.P.H. is an Assistant Professor in the University of Alabama- Birmingham’s Department of Medicine.  She received her undergraduate degree in International Relations from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.  She attended Medical School at Vanderbilt University and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.  Following residency, she participated in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars’ Program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.  While there, she obtained a Master’s degree in public health from the UNC School of Public Health.

Dr. Cherrington is committed to efforts that bridge the gap between the health care system and underserved communities.  Her clinical practice is located at a community health center within the Cooper Green Mercy Hospital System, Alabama’s only county-owned, safety-net hospital.  Her research focuses on developing, implementing and evaluating community-based interventions to improve the outcomes of disadvantaged populations at high risk for developing chronic disease- specifically diabetes.

Her Physician Faculty Scholar Program project is entitled “Weight Loss and Diabetes Prevention in Latina Immigrants: Advancing Methods of Community-Based Intervention Delivery.”  The objective of the project is to develop and test a culturally relevant, community-based intervention to promote weight loss and diabetes prevention among overweight or obese Latina immigrants.  The study seeks to advance methods of community-based intervention delivery by combining the Community Health Advisor model with a multi-component, technology-assisted support system comprising health professionals.
